Beit Guvrin-Maresha National Park is one of the most unique places in Israel, also known as the “Land of a Thousand Caves.” It is located in the central part of the country and was established in 1989. Initially, the caves served for quarrying stone, but later they were adapted for various economic purposes: olive presses, dovecotes, stables, baths, and shelters.
The ruins from the Roman period in Beit Guvrin include a Roman amphitheater, built in the 2nd century on the northwestern outskirts of the city. It accommodated about 3,500 spectators and was used for gladiatorial contests and battles with wild animals. Beit Guvrin also features the ruins of the Byzantine Church of Saint Anne, a Crusader fortress, and Roman baths covering more than 4,000 square meters. Beit Guvrin-Maresha Park is a unique archaeological site. In 2014, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, highlighting its cultural and historical significance.
The national park is open year-round from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, but it’s best to check the operating hours, as the schedule may change depending on visitor numbers. It takes about an hour to travel from Tel Aviv. First, take Highway 1, then Highway 6, and finish your journey on Highway 35.
